Schemas and Fill in the Blanks

As humans, we construct understandings based on our prior knowledge, experiences, skills, attitudes, and beliefs. This ideology is illustrated in the following task and is an example of the cognitive framework, Schema, developed by theorist Jean Piaget.

The task (taken from EDC3100 Week 1 content):

Your task is to fill in the blanks of the paragraph below. Try and find words that from your own experience make sense of this paragraph.

The questions that p________ face as they raise ch________ from in_________ to adult are not easy to an _________. Both f______ and m________ can become concerned when health problems such as co_________ arise anytime after the e____ stage to later life. Experts recommend that young ch____ should have plenty of s________ and nutritious food for healthy growth. B___ and g____ should not share the same b______ or even be in the same r______. They may be afraid of the d_____.

My response:

The questions that people face as they raise children from infant to adult are not easy to answer. Both females and males can become concerned when health problems such as conception arise anytime after the early stage to later life. Experts recommend that young children should have plenty of smart and nutritious food for healthy growth. Boys and girls should not share the same beds or even be in the same rooms. They may be afraid of the dark.

After a google search i found the original paragraph:

The questions that poultrymen face as they raise chickens from incubators to adult are not easy to answer. Both farmers and merchants can become concerned when health problems such as coccidiosis arise anytime after the egg stage to later life. Experts recommend that young chicks should have plenty of sunshine and nutritious food for healthy growth. Bantees and geese should not share the same barnyard or even be in the same roost. They may be afraid of the dark.

Well I was completely of topic! However it demonstrated to me how my brain interpreted this paragraph completely different to the original  based on my personal experiences. After posting, I spent a few minutes reading through other students responses and was fascinated to find that other students answers were the same or very similar to mine. I believe this is due to the fact that we are all studying Education and have interacted with children.

Always Learning,

Ellen

  1. isn’t it strange how all students instinctively related this back to children or families when indeed it was not even close. I wrote it out and then googled the top sentence and the actual version came up but I decided not to be a ‘cheater’ and do what I began with….
